Quick Facts

  • Slow-growing upright broadly columnar form

  • Like all yews, thrives in dry shade and can be pruned back to old wood and will re-sprout readily

  • Reaches 7-8 ft high by 3 ft wide in 10 years, but can reach 20 ft high when mature

The most common use for Irish yews is for hedging. They grow naturally upright and are very easy to shape and prune. Gardeners and landscapers often choose these for hedging over other common Eastern Arborvitae. The needles are straight with a fine tip. The trees produce red berries in the fall, but be cautioned as they are poisonous.
