Quick Facts

  • Slow-growing columnar evergreen shrub with dark green foliage

  • Tolerant of dry shade

  • New growth will sprout even from mature wood, making it popular for hedges and topiary

  • Can reach 20 ft. when mature

The Hicks Yew is a shrub that grows upright and stays skinny, reaching nice heights of 10-12 ft. but growing as tall as 20 ft. when fully mature. The height of a Hicks Yew is easily maintained by shearing.

The foliage consists of dark green needles that are usually around 1 inch long and very thin. When you shear the Hicks Yew this not only controls the height but also helps the foliage stay dense. The Hicks Yew produces a bright red seed in late summer and fall; be cautioned, however, as the seeds are poisonous and would be best avoided if you have young children unless you can trust they will follow your advice. These shrubs are very easy to shape, and have been used to make some amazing sculptures, topiaries, and unique hedges.
