Quick Facts

  • A broadleaf evergreen with small round leaves and slow growth habit

  • Takes well to pruning and makes a great choice for hedges and topiary

  • Tolerates inner city settings and pollution

The common boxwood is a large shrub – or even tree, if left completely alone.  However, most people know it as a small shrub with dense foliage most commonly used in hedges.  One of the most popular evergreen shrubs used in hedges, it is widely used in Europe and more recently in North America.
The common boxwood can grow to be quite tall, but it is rarely seen as such because most people who plant this shrub plan on growing a nicely manicured hedge.  It is slow growing, and the leaves are smooth, dark green, and shiny in texture;  they can retain their colour year-round but have been known to brown in severe winter winds.  The common boxwood can be planted in areas receiving anywhere from full sun to full shade, making it a very versatile plant.  These shrubs are very easy to shape and make great manicured hedges or attractive, stand-alone pieces.
